How to Write a Note?

Very important element of Model UN.

Note writing is one of the most interesting things in Model UN. It’s basically when you send a letter to a delegation either asking them to join your bloc or learn more about their ideas. I try to send as many as possible. Basically, I send one to every delegation that makes a speech. Sending a note is a great way to establish yourself in a committee as well. It makes your country known and encourages others to work with you.

Usually within the first notes I write I’ll say something like “I love your speech! Your ideas are great. Would you be interested in meeting at the back left door during the next unmod?” In other words, you should invite them to collaborate with you. Send a variation of this to every country that makes a speech. Don’t forget to sign off on your country name too.

I also try to add a little compliment like “I love your fit” or “your speech was so impressive” to make my note seem nicer. It’s important that people in your committee actually like you so that they vote in favor of your resolution or actually join your bloc. If you’re disliked and overall a “mean” person in your notes then nobody is going to want to join you or be part of your resolution.

Later in the conference notes will be used to discuss possible mergers and in general opening up a dialogue with other blocs. Usually when we go into moderated causes once blocs are formed I try to send a note to every bloc that makes a speech. I’ll say something like “what’s your acronym and your general ideas.” Most of the time I don’t actually care but when we start to move into mergers I’ll be their contact point.
