The short answer is that if you have good solutions and ideas then no it doesn’t matter. However, delegates tend to gravitate towards larger countries like the United States and China. If you have one of these I personally believe you have it at least slightly easier. The power and influence of these countries often translates to the fictional Model UN sphere as well.
It’s also beneficial to have a country that relates heavily to the topic at hand. For instance, if you’re in the UNHCR then having a country with an active conflict zone such as Myanmmar or Syria would be more beneficial. In other words, it’s important to represent a country that is actually affected by the issue.
However, it honestly doesn’t matter if you don’t have a large country or the issue doesn’t SIGNIFICANTLY affect you. I’ve won awards as Italy, Australia, Guinea, and Argentina. As long as your ideas are good it doesn’t matter but having a country like the ones I mentioned previously wouldn’t hurt.
