How to Decide Between Topic A and B?

Best tips for picking a topic

Many delegates often ask me, “How do I know which topic I should focus my research on?” Well, the quick answer is that you need comprehensive answers and solutions to both. However, during committee your committee will be tasked with choosing between topic A and B. The decision made here will decide what the entire committee is debating for the duration of the conference.

While you are only debating one topic during committee it’s important to remember that EITHER topic can be chosen so I wouldn’t simply only research one. However, I’ve also noticed that most committees tend to gravitate towards topic A. This might just be because it’s the first topic everyone researched though.

Now, how do you personally decide which topic to vote for? Well, firstly I would consider if topic A is really “bad.” Unless it’s literally unresearchable or super niche it’s the most likely one to be chosen so I would just write a topic speech on that. I would also suggest taking into account which topic you have better solutions on.

If your topic B solutions are significantly better than topic A then choose that one. The topic speeches and picking the topic you want is pretty important I would say. Many delegates send notes to people who want to debate the same topic. Thus, if you pick a topic no one wants to debate then less people will send you notes.
