How to Make the Perfect Speech

Learn my secrets to making the PERFECT Model UN speech.

Knowing how to make a speech is one of the most integral (if not THE MOST) elements of Model UN. In my experience it can be the standing factor in whether you’re a leader within your bloc. It’s also the main method I personally use to set myself up as a core member within my group.

If people remember your speech then they’ll most likely want to work with you because you command a powerful presence. One of the best tips I can give you is to speak confidently. I know this sounds wishy washy and a bit like common sense but I cannot stress how important it is to speak boldly.

Try not to stutter or stumble over your words; instead I suggest trying to speak loudly. However, DO NOT SCREAM AT THE AUDIENCE. In my last committee this delegation was constantly yelling their speeches and it honestly just doesn’t sound good. Everytime they spoke I saw the chairs glance at each other in a “that’s not a good look” type of way. Confidence doesn’t equate to a loud voice. Just don’t whisper.

One other tip I have is to memorize your speeches. If you have a partner you also need to be dynamic. For example, alternate lines, don’t just each say a bloc or paragraph or text. MAKE SURE YOU PRACTICE!!!

During my speeches I also like to incorporate some type of movement. Sometimes I walk in a circle whilst snapping my fingers (every second that passes 1, 2, 3 (snap, snap, snap) another child dies from hunger). This is a great way to stand out in a sea of great speeches. In one of my committees from last year I got the superlative for best speech 😉.

I also try to maintain eye contact with the audience. Try and pick a spot to look at in the room and focus your attention there. I like to look at one person the entire time. It’s also fine to be nervous. I always get a pit in my stomach when I go up for a speech but once you start it gets better.

Additionally, if you make a mistake just remember to keep going. Don’t stop. I’ve made mistakes in a speech before and still gavelled. I promise it’s not that deep.
