During my first few conferences I totally over researched. I had a whole binder of research that was honestly just unnecessary. It was literally 50 pages of printed out articles. Trust me, you do not need to do that much.
But in the conferences after that I was UNDER researching. I came in with the bare minimum and was only awarded verbals. In MUN you need to have the perfect balance of research: not too little but also not too much.
I tend to make a document of interesting statistics that could be used in speeches but I don’t print out whole articles. It’s important to find the pieces you need and only use that.
For example, “Every month, an area over 133 square miles is lost [in Argentina]” I only write down important stats like this.
Another thing to note is that you should have research on your country specifically. Don’t be too general and instead try and find stats like the one I just mentioned. You need to know how the topic relates to your country and incorporate it into your speeches. Chairs love to see this in my experience.
Also, research for position papers is honestly not important. I just use Chat GPT and rewrite it so it can safely go through an AI detector. I spend about 30 minutes total writing it because the only award you get from your position paper is a book award (which is stupid and barely any conferences give it out). I recommend focusing your time on writing speeches and doing other, more important, issues.
The most important part of MUN is your solutions. They’re what make you stand out from other delegates and ensure a good award. I used to always use Chat GPT and propose a “shared database” but that’s just unoriginal. You need something unexpected that can be at the center of your resolution paper. Lately, I’ve been coming up with acronym plans. For example, I’d propose the ECODrive initiative or a Green Certification Program (I’ve done UNEP committees for the last few conferences….)
Anyway, make sure your solutions are something you can base an entire resolution paper on. I also recommend making a lot of them. lately, I’ve been researching niche technologies and incorporating them into different parts of the resolution paper. I ensure that I’m an essential figure in all sections so it’d an undeniable fact that I go up for Q and A.
Thanks for reading my researching tips!
