I’ve found that it’s best to have a balance between being a “power del” and chill. The best delegates are fun to talk to but also a clear leader in their bloc.
I establish my presence with an AMAZING speech. I memorize and practice it a week in advance to the conference. This is a great way to build up your aura in your committee (I won the best speech superlative 🙂
Then when we go into blocs I’m chill. Lately, I haven’t been saying the “do you guys want to go around in a circle saying ideas” phrase. It doesn’t really do anything and there are better ways to establish yourself.
I’ll whisper to the people around me about how one person is annoying and acts like a power del. Then I propose splitting off and I just take like 3/4 of the bloc and combine with another smaller bloc.
I also wouldn’t recommend focusing on the smaller things. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE THE ONE WHO CAME UP WITH YOUR BLOC NAME!!!! It’s genuinely not that deep. Just make sure you’re involved in the conversation. Say things like “let’s take a vote” or “what do you guys think about this?” Guide the conversation and let your bloc members do the work for you.
A lot of people also ask my about “collecting” resolution paper drafts (if it’s a paper conference) and honestly it doesn’t matter. BUT if you really care you can just say “lets lay all the papers on the ground so we can all review them before submitting.” It doesn’t matter who submits it but I like to give it to the weakest person in the bloc. If it’s a tech conference I’m always the one to create the document. I’ve noticed that the leaders in other blocs are also the ones who make the shared doc but honestly if you don’t it’s fine. Just make sure you write a HUGE section of it so they have no choice but to give you a Q and A spot.
During breaks I’ll also hang out with other dels and make sure I’m seen as someone chill but also smart and diplomatic. I like to make TikToks and fit checks with them. Sometimes if I see a cute guy I’ll also go talk to them (MUN is fun).
Keep these tips in mind during your next conference. BYE and thanks for reading!
